Key takeaways

  • To buy used electronics on eBay safely, make sure the condition field, description, real photos and item specifics match, the seller has a credible feedback profile and you pay only through eBay's checkout.
  • Test the device as soon as it arrives and report any problem through the order in your eBay account within eBay's time limit.
  • If you buy from tested before on eBay, the checks are already done: every device is tested, reset with accounts removed and listed with real photos and an honest condition grade.

If you want to buy used electronics on eBay, check three things before you pay: whether the condition field, description, photos and item specifics tell the same story, whether the seller has a credible feedback profile, and whether you are paying through eBay's checkout. Only then, under eBay's current terms, does its buyer protection normally apply. Once the item arrives, test it immediately.

At tested before, that's already done for you: we test every used device before selling it on eBay or Vinted, reset it and show it with real photos and an honest condition grade.

How do you read an eBay listing for used electronics?

The title, condition field, description, photos and item specifics such as model and storage should all fit together. If anything doesn't add up, ask a private seller through eBay's messages before you buy, so the answer is on record.

The seller picks the condition field from a list provided by eBay, but the details that matter are in the description: scratches, replaced parts, battery health, accessories and known faults. “Untested” or “for parts or not working” means the seller is not promising that the device works. Good photos show the actual device for sale from every side, with the screen switched on; manufacturer images are not enough for a used device. For what “refurbished” means compared with “used”, see our guide to refurbished vs used.

How do you spot a trustworthy seller on eBay?

The feedback profile is your most useful tool:

  • Number of ratings: plenty of feedback built up over time says more than a handful of very recent ratings.
  • Positive feedback percentage: a high figure carries little weight if there are only a few ratings.
  • Recent negative and neutral feedback: if comments such as “not as described” or “battery weaker than stated” keep coming up, take note.
  • What they sold before: an account that sold books for years and suddenly lists expensive smartphones may be in someone else's hands.

Listings usually also show whether the seller is registered as a business. As a consumer, you generally have more statutory rights when buying from a business than from a private individual (general information, not legal advice).

Why should you only pay through eBay's checkout?

Under eBay's current terms, the eBay Money Back Guarantee generally applies when an item doesn't arrive or doesn't match the listing; some categories are excluded, and there are time limits. Payments made outside eBay are not covered, even if you found the item on eBay. That is exactly where scammers try to lure you:

Be equally wary of messages that look as if they come from eBay and contain a payment link: always check your purchases directly in the eBay app or on the eBay website you normally use.

What should you check when the device arrives?

  1. Film the unboxing in one take, starting with the sealed parcel.
  2. Compare the device, accessories and condition with the listing.
  3. Check the serial number or IMEI against the seller's details (on smartphones, *#06# shows the IMEI).
  4. Set the device up with your own account: it's the only reliable way to rule out an active Activation Lock or Google account lock.
  5. Test the battery, screen, cameras, buttons, ports, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

If something is wrong, report it factually through the order in your eBay account, with photos or a video. If you and the seller can't resolve it, you can ask eBay to step in, provided you stay within the time limits. For every check on phones, see our used smartphone checklist.
