Key takeaways

  • The safest place to buy a used Samsung Galaxy is a business seller that tests every device before selling it; on eBay and Vinted, the platform's protection also applies under its terms when you pay through the platform.
  • Before buying any Android phone, check that no other Google or Samsung account is still signed in, otherwise theft protection blocks the setup.
  • With tested before, these checks are already done: every Galaxy is tested and reset before it goes on sale, and the listing shows real photos and an honest condition grade.

The safest way to buy a used Samsung phone is from a business seller that tests every device before selling it and documents the condition honestly with real photos. In a private sale, all the checking is up to you. At tested before you'll find Samsung Galaxy phones from the S23 to the latest S models, including Plus, Ultra and FE, plus the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, each tested before sale, on eBay and Vinted with the platform's protection under its terms.

Where can you buy a used Samsung Galaxy?

The main differences are who checks the device, what rights you have and how much you have to check yourself.

Where to buyProtection when buyingDevice checkYour risk
Manufacturer's programme and refurbished marketplacesStatutory rights, manufacturer's or marketplace's termsBy the manufacturer or retailer, scope variesLow to medium, choice of models often limited
Business sellers on eBay and VintedStatutory rights, the platform's protection under its termsDepends on the seller, details in the listingLow to medium
Private sellers on classifieds sites and marketplacesStatutory rights usually excluded, usually no protection with cashYou check it yourselfHigher, especially for locks and hidden faults

On eBay and Vinted, the listing shows whether the seller is a business or a private individual. Always pay through the platform itself, otherwise its protection usually doesn't apply.

What should you check before buying a used Samsung phone?

If you buy from a private seller, these checks are up to you. You'll find the full list in our used smartphone checklist.

  • Theft protection: after a reset, an Android phone stays tied to the owner's Google account, and a Samsung phone to their Samsung account too, unless the accounts were removed first. If the setup asks for the previous owner's details, don't buy.
  • Device management and financing: company phones and phones bought on finance can be locked. If a notice about management by an organisation appears during setup, the phone is not free to use.
  • Screen: check the OLED screen on a grey and a white background for burned-in outlines, lines and dead pixels.
  • Battery: on many Galaxy models, the Samsung Members app shows the battery status under Diagnostics. Our guide to battery health on iPhone and Android explains how to read the figures.
  • Updates and hardware: check how long Samsung will keep updating the model, and test the cameras, fingerprint sensor, speaker, microphone and connectivity, for example with the diagnostics in Samsung Members.
  • Z Fold and Z Flip: according to Samsung, the factory-fitted film on the inner screen should stay on, and the hinge should open evenly and stay put when half open.

With tested before, these checks are already done: we test and reset every Galaxy before it goes on sale, and the condition grade and real photos are in the listing.

Why buy from a business seller that tests its phones?

When you buy as a consumer from a business seller, your statutory rights apply: if the phone already had a fault when it was delivered, the seller has to put it right. Online, you usually also have a right of withdrawal. In a private sale, these rights are usually excluded, and then you carry the risk alone. This is general information, not legal advice.

A seller who tests every device before selling it also spots locks, weak batteries and faulty components before the phone reaches you.

How do you buy a used Samsung phone from tested before?

  1. Read the listing: every listing shows real photos of the device, the condition grade, the price, shipping and the returns terms.
  2. Buy through the platform: you pay on eBay or Vinted, where the platform's protection applies under its terms.
  3. Set it up: the phone arrives tested and reset, ready for your own Google or Samsung account.

We check functions, screen, battery, buttons, cameras and connectivity, and on a Fold or Flip both screens and the folding mechanism. The condition grade describes the phone's appearance honestly, and many phones have barely been used. Our quality page explains how we test. If you have a question after delivery, message us on WhatsApp or through the eBay and Vinted messages; our statutory warranty and returns page explains how returns work.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a tested used Samsung phone?
At tested before, for example: we sell Samsung Galaxy phones from the S23 range onwards, including Plus, Ultra and FE, plus the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, and test every one before selling it on eBay and Vinted, where the platform's protection applies under its terms. Every listing shows real photos and the condition grade.
How can I tell if a used Android phone is locked?
Have the phone reset and start the setup. If it asks for the previous owner's Google account or, on a Samsung, their Samsung account, theft protection is still active and you shouldn't buy it.
How do I check battery health on a used Samsung phone?
On many Galaxy models, the Samsung Members app shows the battery status under Diagnostics. If there is no such reading, a battery runtime test helps.
Does a used Samsung Galaxy still get updates?
It depends on the model: Samsung publishes on its website how long a model receives Android and security updates. For the S23 range it promises five years of security updates from launch, and seven years from the S24 range onwards and for the Z Fold6 and Z Flip6.
